Oneohtrix Point Never: <Replica> (2011)
Old TV commercials are among the materials used in <Replica>. Daniel Lopatin changes the pitch of sampled sounds, repeats them, and places the same fragment beside different sounds. The album finds unfamiliar relationships in familiar material.
Lopatin explained that he pieced together his favourite parts by hand when making <Sleep Dealer>, varying the repetitions from section to section. A sound returns while the sounds around it change. Repeating something and leaving it unchanged become two different things.
<Replica> brings together piano, synthesizers, and sustained drones. Short fragments and long tones create different flows within the same album. Following the materials of experimental music has led us all the way to TV commercials. Even ads can come in handy once you cut them up.
